These events all contributed to the general subject matter of the album & its title 'Absent Friends.' Neil says: 'Most of the songs employ stories & characters as a framework within which are discussed the loose themes of coming, going & not quite being where you want to be'. The album was produced & largely performed by Neil Hannon, recorded by Guy Massey & mixed by Nigel Godrich. Longstanding collaborator Joby Talbot contributed the orchestral arrangements.
